Ethics in Idaho and its Programs are About
Informed, Positive and Productive ACTION.

No Complaints by Tejvan Pettinger -  condensed with permission from www.srichinmoybio.co.uk/blog/life/no-complaints/

A while back I tried a period of not criticising people, it was an interesting experiment, if rather difficult. Living without complaining is not burying our head in the sand thinking the world has no problems.

You Can’t Change The World But You Can Change Yourself.  The road to inner peace is never dependent on ironing out all the problems of society and the world first. We cannot wait for the world to be perfect before we love.

Complaining v Gratitude.  If we look for the positive, at the same time we are working on the making improvements through positive action, we can cultivate the good in life.

Complaining and Mistreatment.  There is a great scene in Fawlty Towers (Waldorf Salad I think) - Two old ladies are served some grizzly old meat; it’s so overcooked they can barely eat it. When Basil Fawlty (John Cleese) asks if they are enjoying their meal they fake a smile and say ‘O, yes Lovely’ But, as soon as he turns his back they screw up their face and spit out the meat. They then start complaining to each other about how bad it is. It is said this is a typical English and Canadian trait - we don’t stand up to bad service. We don’t say anything outwardly, but we bitterly complain inwardly. This reluctance to complain outwardly has not helped; it just means we complain silently and nurse our grievance. If we have a legitimate grievance it is good to politely and calmly express it. It gives chance for the other person to rectify their bad service.

Complaining over Things we Have No Control.  There are many things in life which are unjust, unfair and unpleasant. There is a big difference between complaining and doing something about it. The old maxim ‘actions speak louder than words’ is oft repeated but, there is much wisdom in that saying.

Complaints are Often misinformed.  Often we complain but we maybe complain on false premises.   It’s easy to complain, it’s more difficult to do something about it.   We may complain about a difficult person. However, that person could be forcing us to face up to our own weaknesses.  Rather than complaining we have to learn to deal with difficult people; it may be an opportunity in disguise.

Complaints Don’t Solve Anything.  If we tell the waiter the tea is cold, he can heat it up. But, most of our complaints do nothing to solve anything. If we spent the same energy from complaints into something positive, we would have a chance to make a significant improvement to our life and people around us.

Ethics in Idaho believes it only takes one person to make a difference.  One person can change the “culture” of any organization, court or government.  That person can be a clerk, a citizen, a judge, a prosecutor, public defender, attorney, or police officer.     It is our greatest hope that you are an attorney, judge, or public official.  You are EI’s best audience and we hope to partner you with the public in ways that have been defined, and other ways that have not yet been imagined.  We are here to cause ethics to be a topic that is popular and an openly sought after behavior within the legal system and government we all enjoy in Idaho and the U.S.  We are here to help everyone make the right decisions, even if “the group” has been doing differently for some time.   We invite those in the legal field and public office to proudly wear the Ethics in Idaho T-Shirt or boast an exclusive keychain we plan to offer exclusively to attorneys.  Many of who hold long standing public trust and success already.  The Idaho Attorney General provides a great deal of information about government and elected officials.  It offers an informational booklet called “Idaho Ethics in Government”.   Amazingly, it’s actually up to the citizens to enforce these laws (according to the AG’s office).   Those in the legal field and public office are people; and although people are capable of great feats; they can also take advantage of power, take on bully tactics, become prejudice and fall into habits that are contrary to what their position stands for.  Accountability helps put and keep a high value on these critical roles.  Let’s all accept the Idaho State Attorney General’s invitation and instruction and actively enforce the Idaho Ethics in Government rules.  Part of that is being “at the table”, as we are now.  A great deal of what happens sometimes may not even be officially against any rules, but it doesn’t make it right.    The public, a secretary, anyone can have a say and not have to worry about their job, social standing, or other pressure.  In the spirit of wanting the same thing, let’s make Ethics in Idaho stronger than just a link on a state or any other website!
